The Problem...
Reducing Large Cores for Scrap
Riverwood International Corporation of West Monroe, Louisiana, a large
manufacturer of printed paperboard beverage carriers, faced a major
problem disposing of 300 tons a year of 12" diameter x 1/2" wall fiber
cores because the local landfill would no longer accept them. Beverage
carriers are produced at this facility on five rotogravure presses and
one flexographic printer that, together, use 120,000 tons of board a
year.
The Solution...
A Floor Mounted Shredder
Riverwood
International installed a BloApCo Model 3J42-3058H floor-mounted shredder
that was specifically configured to handle the 12" diameter x 1/2" wall
cores as well as its normal full range of scrap that consists of roll
slab and peel plus die cut-outs. The BloApCo shredder's unique "Pierce-and-Tear"
action reduces the scrap into pieces that can be pneumatically conveyed
from the shredder to a cyclone over a baler for efficient baling of
the scrap. The new BloApCo shredder utilized the existing pneumatic
scrap handling system, requiring only a "Y" fitting and a short piece
of duct to be connected. The fact that an adjacent 20-year-old BloApCo
shredder is still being used on a daily basis certainly was a factor
in selecting BloApCo for this new application. The unique thing about
this project is that now Riverwood International is able to easily dispose
of 300 tons per year of cores, plus it is selling the shredded cores
at the same high rate that it is getting for the paperboard waste. Riverwood
International has gotten rid of a 300-ton-a-year "headache" and is getting
paid for it as well. The resultant payback of the shredder far exceeded
expectations
